THÙNG RỖNG KÊU TO

Hãy học các dòng nước,

Từ khe núi vực sâu.

Nước khe núi chảy ồn,

Biển lớn động im lặng.

Cái gì trống kêu to,

Cái gì đầy yên lặng,

Ngu như ghè vơi nước,

Bậc trí như ao đầy.

Taṁ nadīhi vijānātha,

Sobbhesu padaresu ca;

Saṇantā yanti kusobbhā,

Tuṇhī yanti mahodadhī.

Yadūnakaṁ taṁ saṇati,

Yaṁ pūraṁ santameva taṁ;

Aḍḍhakumbhūpamo bālo,

Rahado pūrova paṇḍito. – (Snp 720-721)

Nên nhận biết điều ấy từ các con sông ở các hố nước và các khe nước, các dòng nước nhỏ di chuyển gây tiếng động, đại dương im lặng di chuyển.

Cái gì thiếu kém cái ấy làm thành tiếng vang, cái gì đầy ắp cái ấy thật yên tịnh. Kẻ ngu tương tự cái chum đầy một nửa, bậc sáng suốt tựa như hồ nước đầy tràn. – (Snp 720-721, Tỳ-khưu Indacanda dịch)

What is unfilled makes noise

but silent is what’s full,

the fool is like the pot half-filled,

the wise one’s like a lake that’s full.

When a samaṇa speaks much

full of goodness and meaning:

Knowing Dharma he speaks,

Knowing he speaks so much.
